Grandfather clock maker?
My mother has an antique Bristol Grandfather clock dated sometime back in the 1700′s. She has the first name of the maker, but the last name is rubbed off. The first name is John, and the last name looks like it begins with an O and is about 10 letters long. Anyone have any ideas who this maker could be, or any information on how I can find out?
Your local library should have a copy of Britten’s ‘Old clocks and watches and their makers’, Ballie’s ‘Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’, and Loomes’ ‘ ‘Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’, Vol 2′ .
These between them contain the details of many hundreds of thousands of clockmakers.
By shining light at an angle onto the dial you may be able to make out the text which has rubbed off as it will be a slightly different colour
