Why is the price of some collectibles so much less than 10 years ago?
I found a McCoy touring car cookie jar in my mom’s estate. I consulted two of Kovel’s antique price guides. In the 1995 edition, the price of this item was set at $80. In the 2007 edition, the price had fallen to $29 for the same thing. What’s going on?
Usually a collectibles value is determined by the availability of that item on the open market. Probably what happened is the same as what you found. The price in 1995 was fairly good for your item and people brought their cookie jars out of the closets and cupboards and started to sell them. Now all these little hidden treasures are coming onto the market and are easily found and the price has come down because everyone can find them. It’s the treasures that are staying hidden that are keeping their value.
