Dinner plate sizes…..?
Today at a antique fair, there was a lady selling vintage 1950s dinner sets (you know, matching plates and bowls….I’m not sure the right term for the sets). They were so much smaller than the standard sizes of today. She had multiple sets, and all were similarly sized. The biggest dinner plates were the size of standard salad plates today, and the serving bowls were no where close to the bucket sized ones everyone uses now. Also in the 1950s, people tended to have large families, so obviously the serving sizes were smaller in proportion to what they ate off of.
It got me to thinking- are today’s super sized plates something that came about to meet the demand of super sized people,, or did they make plates bigger, and people started subconsciously eating larger portions as a result?
My grannies dinner plates are large… maybe that set includes dessert or luncheon plates.
Our dinner plates in the 50′s were large. The other plates were side plates or luncheon plates or dessert plates.
People tend to fill a larger plate with more food. YES!
