Question for fort lauderdale locals?
Does the restraunt known locally as “Dirty Ernies” still exist? I doubt it’s real name was Dirty Ernies, but it was a medium sized two story affair with an open balcony on the second story. The walls downstairs had political cartoons painted on the walls. The specialties of the house were conch chowder, conch salad, conch fritters, and Bimini bread. I Believe it was one of Jimmy Buffett’s favorite area haunts, and was, I think, located in the “antique district”, (as I heard it refered to). I was there several times in the early 80′s, and really loved it.
Ernie’s barbecue still exists (2 blks so. of 17th St. on US-1) & still has the same menu, same waitresses & (from all appearances) same customers — including me. Unfortunately they’ve painted over the Libertarian anti-government rants, but the conch chowder bowl & Bimini Bread is still the best quick lunch deal in Ft. Lauderdale.
