Is this worth anything?
I have an old rug with what looks like an image of the war of independence as their is a soldier with a red coat on a white horse on it pointing to a silhouette of the Statue of Liberty in the background. (Of course I’m only guessing as I’m no antique dealer) There are other random soldiers who are faceless. There are no names on the rug, so its making it a bit tough for me to have a starting point. Any help appreciated
What you have here is called in the Canadian Antique world
a “Corbett Alkyian Rug”
These were most popular in 1911-1913
You are right about it being a war of the independence.
Depending on the condition of this rug, I could estimate it at a minimum price of $250 and can (now this is with the right buyer with the right conditions) an upwards of $4000-$4500.
The artist is either
Thomas Saint-Croken, a rug artist who passed away at the age of 36, whos art became famous in the craze of the ’80s,
or it may be (but less likely to be) Ralph Alastor Leger, a poet and artist from the 1930′s who became famous for his piece in poetry “Alas but Bearded Lives On” and in his later years became famous in rug work.
