Romantic first-anniversary destinations in the midwest, share your expertise with a young couple!?
Dear all,
My husband and I will be celebrating our first anniversary this September. We’ll be in Indiana at the time, and really don’t know the Midwest at all. So we’re asking for your help and expertise!
What is a great place to spend two nights, no more than 4 or 5 hours from SW Indiana?
Some extra info:
- We’re looking to spend between $150-300 or so per night
- We love history, museums, antiques and art
- We’re not outdoorsy (no hiking/camping), though we would enjoy a quiet place in the countryside with exciting things in the area (museums, historic estates, etc)
- We’re not really looking for a big city trip, unless you have a really great specific location for a city within our reach (like Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Chicago, Louisville, etc)
- We’d like to stay at a unique hotel or Bed and Breakfast.

West Baden Springs Hotel, a hotel and casino in French Lick, Indiana and close to Louisville, has been called the Eighth Wonder of the World due to it’s circular building topped by the world’s largest dome.
If you would want to stay in Louisville, there are several Bed & Breakfast’s located in Old Louisville, the third largest historic preservation district in the United States, and its’ largest purely Victorian neighborhood that does not feel as if you are in a large city.
The Frazier International History Museum features a collection of the British Royal Armouries, the first time a UK National Museum has opened a ‘branch’ in the USA.
Farmington, built in 1815-1816, is a house designed by Thomas Jefferson for the Speed family. Joshua Speed was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln’s. Abraham Lincoln visited Farmington in 1841 and made Joshua Speed’s older brother James his Attorney General in 1864.
Locust Grove was the last home of General George Rogers Clark. George Rogers Clark was the founder of Louisville, a Revolutionary war hero, and the older brother of William Clark of the Lewis & Clark pair who explored the western United States.
The J.B.Speed Art Museum, located on the campus of the University of Louisville, is Kentucky’s oldest and largest art museum with over 12,000 pieces in its permanent collection
The Steamboat the Belle Of Louisville has cruises on the Ohio River. No other river steamboat in American history has lasted as long, been to as many places, or traveled as many miles as the Belle of Louisville. It can feel as if you are taking a step back in time.
The Kentucky Derby Museum gives you a first hand look at the “greatest two minutes in sports,” an event for which Louisville and Kentucky are known worldwide. The Greatest Race, a multi-image show on a 360 degree screen in the shape of a track, gives an overview of the life of a Derby horse from foal to winner’s circle on Derby Day.
There is also the Louisville Antique Mall southeast of downtown on Broadway and Joe Ley Antiques on East Market Street. Bardstown Road also has some great shops and restaurants.
I love these places because I live in Louisville… and have yet to find another place that can lure me away.
