how old is my imari plate?
I’ve got this Imari plate I’m trying to date. It’s a basic circle shape, with a non-directional floral central medallion, and a border composed of four identical repeats. It matches the eBay item 390305295168, at least on the front. But the back is NOT marked with a red & white “signature stamp,” or any stickers warning that it’s for decorative purposes only. It DOES have some handwritten(?) kanji (black and red) and, in Roman letters “IMARI WARE JAPAN” Anybody know if it’s old enough to go to my county fair as an antique (50 years or more)?
Unfortunately your plate is a modern reproduction as the ebay one states, and although the marks on the base don’t correspond there are lots of factory’s producing similar ‘wares’, traditionally an item must be at least 100 years old to be considered an antique but as with most things a few years here or there ddoesn’treally matter, you plate comes under the ‘collectable’ or ‘decorative’ banner but should not be out of place at an antiques fair as people expect a large variety of items at those type of fairs
also the price on ebay is probably a little high but in the right region, good luck in selling it
