Cleaning an old mirror?
9 years ago when my family moved, my grandparents picked up a set of older furniture at a yard sale. The dresser has a very large mirror attachment, and after 9 years, it’s gotten pretty hazy. It cannot be cleaned with Windex, and from reading around, that means the silvering is wearing. What’s the best solution?
I’ve seen suggestions of ammonia solutions, of taking it to get it professionally resilvered, and of leaving it alone so as not to destroy its value. The issue is, resilvering seems like it would be expensive and a hassle. I don’t really care to just leave it, because it would be nice to be able to use the mirror for its intended purpose, and the antique value doesn’t really matter to me – front decorative pieces of the dresser have fallen off anyway.
Are there any simpler, more practical solutions? Thanks.
If replacing the mirror is the best option, I’m better off just ignoring the issue, I guess. The mirror is an odd shape, and I’m leaving for college in the fall anyway.
It might be cheaper to resilver if this is a mirror with bevelled edges. However, there are very few places left that will do this, so it won’t be easy. I read an article about a place in Vancouver BC that does it, and since they are one of only a few places in North America that do resilvering, the waiting list was long, like months,and of course you’ll have to pay to ship it there and back. I imagine any resilvering place these days has a waiting list. Call your local glass shop and see what replacement cost would be. They can cut mirror to any shape, but not many places can do custom bevelling any more either.
