Collocation and compound words?
Hello everybody! I’m an italian student and I have some problems with the analysis of a text in english, I can’t distinguish between collocation and compound words! my dictionary says that the following expressions are collocations, but I think that some of them are compound words!
-affairs of the heart, fashion week, football teams, transport system, fitness center, sea urchins, wine list, good manners, antique dealers, spiral staircase.
The last question, there are some nouns put in attributive position (business etiquette, football matches, hotel concierge) I have to say that they are nouns or adjectives?

Last question: business, football, hotel: as parts of speech they are nouns, but as used in sentence they are adjectives.
This usage is similar in sense to the use of verbals, though the latter is more formal
grammatical entity, comprising three different verb forms, each used as one or more different parts of speech…
EX: Traveling hopefully is better than arriving.
Traveling-gerund- traveling hopefully-gerund phrase IN THIS SENTENCE b/c it functions as a noun and is, indeed, the subject of the sentence (arriving is also a gerund–verb form used as a noun.)
Collocations-an habitual association between two words such as to and fro. Also,
and perhaps more significantly, they are somewhat similar to idioms-”You’ll answer me” vs “You will answer to me” is a kind of subtlety which would baffle a foreigner who had learned formal English, but not the nuances that are usually acquired by living for a time or visiting this country. Indeed, I do not know if UK, Australia, etc use the above as we do.
Compound words-let me refer you to the different types b/c there are several types and as with most human systems, some such words cannot be classified as being this or that absolutely.

The collocation stuff is also dicey.I think you are right about all but one of your words being compounds–I would tend to classify affairs of the heart as a collocation–because it is after all a figure of speech–would people from all countries understand what” heart ” represents in the Western world?
