I want the history of Hassen Forder safe co. Philadelphia, PA circa 1870?
i have acquired an antique floor safe with Hassen Forder Safe Co. Philadelphia, Pa. It has a brass combination lock made by Sargent & Greenleaf Rochester NY with a patent date of 1871. It weighs about 2000 lbs. and wooden shelves inside. I would love to know the history and maybe approximate age of my safe.
The only online reference I’ve found is from an 1876 Industrial Exposition flyer. There are printed indexes to businesses that tell when a company was founded, purchased or closed. I would recommend talking to a librarian, especially a university librarian, to locate a copy of the correct index. Another possibility is to contact a high-end auction house. An appraisal may give you the information you want.
