What are some interesting places in the Portland Oregon area?
I will be moving to the Portland area in about 3 months and I’d like to know some great things to do. I am interested in unique restaurant/cafes (preferably with some vegetarian options), wineries, thrift/antique/used book stores, farmers markets, parks, gardens, etc. I have never visited Oregon and I won’t know anyone, so any information would be awesome, thanks
80% to 90% of the restaurants in Portland are unique (but not the suburbs which are mostly riddled with chain restaurants—Beaverton and Hillsboro are especially Californicated). All but about two restaurants are vegetarian friendly. You will know the exceptions by the names: “Yankee Pot Roast” or “Buster’s Texas BBQ”

About a quarter or third of the food carts are exclusively vegetarian. All others have multiple vegetarian and vegan options.

The Portland area has about 20 farmers markets during the season (mid March to October for most). Find information about them in your local neighborhood paper after you move, or most any neighbor. The one that started it all is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland_Farmers_Market_%28Oregon%29 which has grown so big, it has been divided three or four times.
There are a few wineries around town, and they are convenient. However, with a designated driver there are a few very well known (nationally and internationally) vineyards and wineries less than a 30 minute drive from town. Considering all kinds (most of which are quite good), there are about 35 within an hour drive from downtown.

Look for antique and vintage stores mostly on the inner east side. Sellwood district is known for its row of antique stores.
Powell’s City of Books claims to be the worlds largest bookstore. It shelves new and used books together in a casual utilitarian atmosphere which most bookaholics enjoy. http://www.powells.com/
