If you inherited a valuable piece of artwork, what would you do?
Ok, you don’t know for sure it’s authentic, but you really think it is. There is a place that will authenticate it as they are the ones who are working on the catalog for this artists work. They say that they will destroy it if it’s a fake by chance, but your pretty sure it isn’t as you know it’s old. Do you send it to them? Do you go to a big name auction house? If so, which? The one that’s got the record for the highest price paid? Do you bring it to Antique’s Roadshow in hope to get an appraisal from them? If they say it’s a lower price, then does that set the price at an auction? Does the idea if it were on AR, make the value go higher than it would have if not on the show? If it doesn’t have great provenance beyond the last two owners does that make a huge difference? Any and all opinions is appreciated. Thanks so much!
Contact Sotherby’s and Christie’s Auction houses. You can take the painting to them and get an appraisal for a reasonable fee. It is nearly impossible to get tickets to Antiques Roadshow (I have tried several times but you must win a ticket lottery). Don’t send it to anyone. Take it to be appraised.
