How to clean drywall dust from everything – furniture, plants, toaster? Help!?
My contractor didn’t cover my makeshift kitchen/dining room with drop cloths that I provided. (While I was out of town.) Now there is dust on everything (a lot!!) – upholstered chairs, antique clawfoot oak dining table (in the family for 110 years), tools, lamps, cd’s, books, coffee pot, microwave, cereal boxes, even the toaster. I need to hire someone asap to clean this. Please help. Thanks
Oh boy! That’s a mess!
If you’re looking to hire someone, ask family & friends to give you referrals. Or ask your home owner’s insurance agent who does a good job with such a mess. They get into fire and water clean up and some of these restoration companies do better work than a regular cleaning agency. They have better products to use.
For the upholstered chairs, vacuum with a good vacuum with HEPA filtration. The HEPA filtration will keep the dust in the machine. But clean the filters regularly. You could then shampoo with the upholstery attachment on a carpet cleaning machine.
The dining table will be just fine with an ever so slightly damp microfiber cloth. The microfiber cloth wipes more efficiently and it being damp will trap the dust so you can rinse it out rather than just spread it around. A good rub down with some Scott’s Liquid Gold will finish that job.
The damp microfiber cloth would work on the tools, the lamp bases, cd’s, books too. Use the dust brush from the vacuum on the lamp shade. Coffee pot, wash what you can, wipe down with a microfiber cloth and clean the insides with white vinegar and then run a couple pots of plain water through it.
The microwave should just be surface unless it was used a lot so wipe that down with a damp microfiber cloth inside and out. Same with the cereal boxes IF they were well closed/sealed. If they weren’t, I’d give the birds a treat. The toaster would benefit from a good wipe down and take it outside and blow it out with a can of the compressed air that one can use to clean out electronics.
Rugs would be vacuum really well and shampoo. Dust with the vacuum dust brush and wipe with a damp microfiber cloth for any hard surfaces, rinsing the cloth out very frequently and changing the water. And dishes, pots, pans, silverware, glasses, cups and such would be fine with a good bath either by hand or run through the dishwasher.
