Should I advertise “estate sale” or just “garage sale”?
In the process of liquidating parent’s estate. After a bad experience with an auction service, I’ve decided to do this myself so I have some control over what happens. Last week, I had a sale of what I considered useful and collectible items and advertised it as an “estate” sale. While the turnout was good, I had several dust ups with people who made no secret that they were antique dealers. They were very critical of what I was selling and said that the stuff was just junk that you would see at any tag sale and that I should advertise it as a garage sale and not as an estate sale. I don’t think every sale has Fostoria glass or Red Wing pottery! What are they looking for – a Ming vase for 10 cents? A Chippendale sofa for a buck? I wanted to know if there is something implied in an “estate” sale like “priceless antiques”?
I think that the antique dealers need to understand the definition of “Estate Sale”.
I did a search, and the definition I came across was; an estate sale or estate liquidation is a type of yard sale, garage sale, or auction to dispose of a substantial portion of the materials owned by a person who is recently deceased, or who must dispose of his personal property to facilitate a move.
I am a bit hesitant to say this, however, some individuals can “perceive” themselves in such a manner that is a bit “superior” to those of us less knowledgeable in the area of finer “relics”…lol..i’m really saying how pompous and snooty some people can be. Loved how you described the “treasures” they thought they were going to unearth.
You did absolutely nothing to receive such ridicule. Your estate sale was absolutely NOT misleading. I hope you fared well, and continue to do so with your “estate sale”.
