Clinton Staffer Vandalism?
Remember that controversy over alleged vandalism by outgoing Clinton staffers at the time of the Bush inauguration? The General Accounting Office has at last completed its investigation and found there was approximately $20,000 worth of damage or loss. Missing or broken were 62 keyboards, 26 cell phones, 2 cameras, 10 antique doorknobs, between 5 and 11 medallions, and a number of office signs. Some Clinton partisans insisted at the time that the news stories reporting damage were a fabrication.
The short article does not appear to be biased, based on its content. In context, a check needs to be made of any further text in the article.
Often a biased position is one where something is stated or proclaimed and then evidence is selected, choosing only that evidence that supports the author’s view.
In this case, the author does not leave the heading as a true statement but ends it with a question mark. Also, the author does not claim certainty of the vandalism but qualifies such a possibility by using the word ‘alleged’ which signifies a suspension of belief until proof becomes available.
The author then goes on to report the evidence of an investigation into the matter, by a presumably independent body, the General Accounting Office. A list of missing or damaged items is given. This shows a belief in the importance of evidence and the value of having detailed information. Such a view is fairly balanced. However there is an information drop-off in saying that ‘Some … partisans insisted’ as the reporter should know and state Who those partisans were, allowing the new reader the opportunity to do an ID check.
As a reporting paragraph it seems to be reasonably clear of bias. Of course any report or information can be pure fabrication. To check for this you would need to double check the information with the General Accounting Office, and then hold an internal audit of that office to reasonably ensure that individuals within that office did not make a biased report of the findings (could be by the investigators, or not the investigators but their bosses who control that office’s information output).
On top of all of this, the author has not presented any proof, at least within the given text, that the damage, if real, was actually caused by Clinton’s staffers or by someone else.
And on this vital point the author could indeed be biased (or just be an inefficient investigator or cutting words to meet article restrictions).
So bias can exist but not be clearly discernable; such is life. But from looking at this short piece of reporting: it could not be firmly said that it displays bias.
