The importance of Dura Europos wall paintings?
Does anyone know why are the Dura Europos paintings important for the understanding of the art of late antique (Roman) and early Christian time periods?
The paintings at Dura Europos date from the mid third century i.e. the late Roman/early christian period. They depict among other things, Roman military figures (Dura Europos was a Roman military outpost along the Euphrates in Syria) and, in the synagogue, episodes in jewish history and religion. Interestingly the depiction of soldiers in the synagogue paintings, while meant to represent biblical warriors, are presumably based on the contemporary Roman garrison at Dura or perhaps, the army of Gordian III as it passed by in 244 CE. They indicate that Roman soldiers wore scale or mail armor instead of the lorica segmentata of the first and second centuries. In addition, the troops wore a mail hood, or coif, instead of a helmet. This may mirror the difficulty of the late Roman regime in properly equipping its forces.
