Do you have to wind up a quartz watch?
I have a friend that trying to sell me a watch. He says it is an antique Elgin pocket watch, but says it is a quartz watch. I haven’t seen it yet but it say you have to wind it up. Is he possibly mistaken in saying it is quartz? Did they ever make a quartz watch that winded up it is that something you only had to do to watch with mechanical movements?
Winding is something you do with mechanical movements. Quartz movements run on a small battery.
He may be misled by the knob on the watch which is used to set the correct time.
You can tell if you see the watch operate. A quartz watch will advance the second hand in one second steps. A mechanical watch will tick and advance the second hand in 3 to 6 steps per second.
