What Is the sign on the front fender of these types of motorcycles?
I’ve seen these signs on the front fender on a lot of old antique motorcycles, like royal enfield and Peugeot but I don’t know what there for. I’m sure now days they could say anything but in the 30′s and 40′s what was the original purpose for the sign.

There’s an example motorcycle. The sign on the front fender.
It’s called a number plate, a unique identifying number for each motorcycle in the UK and Europe. Unlike a U.S. license plate, the number stays with a bike for life. Proof of road tax is by means of a separate tax disc, which must also be affixed to the bike and displayed. By way of contrast, a U.S. license plate is proof the registration tax has been paid. The plate may be replaced every few years, so the number may also change.
Because the British registration number stays with the bike for life, some numbers have become quite well-known, like Sammy Miller’s Ariel HT5, GOV 132.
