Believe it or not, antique stores generally get their merchandise by buying it. Sometimes they arrange a private viewing and purchase from estate sales before they open to the public (depending on how well connected they are), and sometimes they go on buying trips to Europe or the great American Midwest and South. And sometimes they will buy what walks through their door attached to an eager seller.
Dallas has a number of specialized antique dealers, including for rare books and antique firearms. Most antique stores will make you an offer on antique jewelry (no 10K or 14K junk, please). ALWAYS deal with a reputable dealer who’s been around awhile. DO NOT sell valuable things to pawn shops, which will always try to low-ball you. Pawn shops almost never offer more than 10% of an item’s real value under any circumstances.
Lots of folks are stunned to learn that the “valuable antique” they have is really a copy or isn’t very old at all. Sometimes the seller will think the shop owner is trying to fiddle with them, so the best bet is to get at least two offers on anything you really think is valuable. Fortunately enough, most antique dealers do not charge for appraising your antique.
Best advice: Call around to a number of antique stores. Ask the manager if her or his shop buys from the public and, if given the opportunity, describe your item. It can get tedious to lug around merchandise store to store.
I wish you luck in selling what you need to sell. As an aside, it’s my personal opinion that the PBS show “Antiques Roadshow” ruined “antiquing” for both the shops and those who collect. But it was a bonanza for those who wish to sell.
