Any tips for photographing items that are the color black?
I sell online, misc. items from antique to new, etc. I have a hard of a time photographing items that are black. I either get them too light, where they look washed out. Or too dark, where they show no detail. I’ve shot inside, outside, with flash, without flash, etc. and still do not get a good image. I have a good, newer digital Kodak. I think it’s just my skill that is lacking.
Really sales are my forte and not photography, so any good basic tips for a novice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Generally speaking if you are photographing something dark that takes up most of the frame you will need to underexpose by 2/3 to 1 stop to keep it from being too light. Your camera meter tries to make everything 18% gray, which means it will automatically overexpose your very dark subjects.
I would shoot in soft light to eliminate harsh shadows which might block up the detail. A nice cloudy day creates a near perfect light for this kind of photography. Alternatively, on a sunny day, photograph in a room using light filtered through a white or off-white curtain.
